CAST Visualization at Diamond Light Source

Alun Ashton (Data Acquisition Group, Diamond) and Karen Padmore (CAST Visualization Director) discuss with guests at Diamond Open Day
CAST's Visualization Team recently contributed to the 2007 Open Days of the new Diamond Light Source synchrotron facility in Didcot near Oxford.
In excess of one thousand people passed through the facility on a special day for scientists and local researchers, whilst pre-booked open access on the following day presented an opportunity for members of the public to "learn about the scientific applications of Diamond, discover how the machine works and the technology behind it, and experience a self-guided tour inside the synchrotron machine." In total, more than 5000 people attended Diamond's Open Days.

Diamond CEO Professor Gerhard Materlik hands-on with CAST's visualization
In association with the team at Diamond, CAST created exclusive content which was then exhibited using one of CAST's autostereoscopic displays and attracted substantial interest and discussion regarding the technology itself and the science behind the materials being presented. The materials consisted of molecular models of Insulin, Myoglobin, and FTPase in animated and interactive rotatable forms, all displayed on a Philips autostereoscopic display. These special displays give the sensation of depth without the need to wear special glasses, and do so with a wide viewing angle, ideal for use as a medium-scale communications medium.
